Caregivers

You can immigrate by providing care for children, the elderly or those with medical needs, or as a live-in caregiver. There are 4 ways to apply for permanent residence as a caregiver.

  1. Interim Pathway for Caregivers: This new program is designed for qualifying in-home caregivers. It caters to work experience as a caregiver Applications are accepted from March 4th 2019- June 4th 2019.

Who can apply?

  • You must have a valid work permit or
  • Have applied to extend your work permit and be waiting on a decision or
  • Have applied to restore your status as a worker
  • You must have 12 months of full-time work experience as a home child care provider or home support worker.
  • You must have a minimum language skill CLB 5 in English or NCL 5 in all four language skills (writing, reading, listening and speaking)
  • You must have a Canadian high school or a non-Canadian education diploma, certificate or credential that equal to a Canadian secondary school (high school)
  1. Caring for Children program: This is a 5 years pilot program designed for caregivers who have provided home child care in Canada for at least 2 years. The caring for children program is scheduled to end on November 29 2019

Who can apply?

  • You must plan to live outside Quebec
  • You must have at least 24 months of full-time work experience in Canada as a home child care provider in the four years (48 months) before you can apply
  • You must have cared for children under the age of 18, in your own or in your employer’s home. You do not need to have lived in your employer’s home to qualify.
  • You must prove your language skills in English or French by taking an approve language test by IRCC. The minimum score is CLB 5 in all four language skills (reading, speaking, writing and listening)
  • You must have a Canadian high school or a non-Canadian education diploma, certificate or credential that equal to a Canadian secondary school (high school)
  1. Caring for people with High medical needs program: This is another 5 years program designed for people with high medical need work experience. The caring for high medical needs program is scheduled to end on November 29 2019. Have been working in Canada for at least 2 years as a registered nurse, licensed practical nurse, nurse aide or home support worker

  • You must have cared for children under the age of 18, on your own or in your employer’s home. You do not need to have lived in your employer’s home to qualify.

Live-in Caregiver program : You can apply for permanent residence through the live-in caregiver program(LCP) if you have at least 2 Years of work experience in the program and you ‘re already working in Canada with a LCP work permit or approved for your first LCP work permit based on LMIA submitted to Employment and Social Development Canada on or before November 30, 2014.
