Which Family Member can I sponsor to Canada?

Yes, there is an immigration program which allows you to sponsor your relatives to Canada. The Liberal immigration agenda for 2017 is family reunification.  In 2017 the government of Canada’s objective was to reunite family members by processing exceptional cases. Under the Family class of Immigration and Refugee Protection Act, a Permanent resident and Canadian citizen can apply to sponsor eligible members of the family class. This includes spouses, partners, dependent children, parents and grandparents.

Can I be a sponsor?

Yes, you can sponsor your family member if

  •   You are at least 18 years old,
  •   You are a Canadian citizen, Permanent resident who lives in Canada, a registered Indian
  •   You are not receiving social assistance for reason other than disability
  •   You can provide basic needs for family member
  •   You are not on bankruptcy
  •   You are not in penitentiary, jail reformatory or prison
  •   You did not become permanent resident through be sponsored
  •   You are not under a removal order
  •   You have not failed to pay

o   An immigration loans

o   A performance bonds

o   Family support payments

  • You have sponsored a previous spouse or partner and three years have not passed since this person became permanent resident.
Types of Sponsorship
  1. Spouse Sponsorship :

You might be eligible to sponsor your spouse if you are

  • 18 years or old
  • Canadian Citizen, PR residence residing in Canada or a registered Indian under(IRPA)
  • Not under any social assistance for reasons other than a disability.
  • Have enough income to provide basic needs

2. Common-Law or Conjugal partner (CJ/CL)

  •  He/she must at least be 18 years old
  • It must be genuine relation
  • CL/CJ must cohabit with you in Canada.

Under the family class any relatives whose application is approved must got through

  • Medical Examination
  • Criminal Check
  • Background check

3.  Parent and Grandparent sponsorship aka PGP:  

Yes, you are allowed to sponsor your parents and Grandparents to Canada as a permanent residence.   In order for your Parent or Grandparent to immigrate the sponsor must commit to these responsibilities

  • Some financial income requirements must be met
  • The sponsor must be able to support them financially.
  • You must sign a sponsorship agreement
